Lookin4Galt

Lookin4Galt by Gasface, with Nicolas Venancio and Mathieu Rochet

A Success Story made in Rhône-Alpes !

Where did the idea for Gasface come from? What tracks did you both follow?

“You could call it the Do It Yourself Track: we did radio shows, produced concerts and huge amounts of web content, and edited our own magazine – Gasface – which earned us the honor of being contacted by Arte to develop a webdoc. The result, New York Minute, gave them their greatest international hit. We followed right on with a TV adaptation and commissions from Foursquare and the European Commission and even from other productions for multimedia writing and directing work. Today we’re an ideas boutique; we roll out solutions that are pertinent for both brands and institutions.”

After the success of New York Minute your new webdoc Lookin4Galt has just been short-listed at Cross-Video Days. Can you tell us a little about this new project? Your intent?

“Lookin4Galt is the story of 2 French people who travel to New York, tracking Galt. Galt is the first name of the composer of Hair, the musical. Galt has removed himself from circulation after this interplanetary success, but his music has lived on, thanks to music sampling by the hip hop and electro generation. It’s a road movie that raises the question of creativity! A sort of Orson Welles “F for Fake”, with Run DMC on the sound track.”

Over the course of the past 2 years, we’ve seen a big increase in documentary projects on the edges of interaction, videography and photography. This creative proliferation has highlighted the need to mix teams’ skill sets and to compare and contrast viewpoints. How do you deal with this dimension in your projects?

"Only recently, the CNC and the regional authorities have begun to assist these projects; this automatically fans the creative fires. There’s also a trendiness side to it, an attraction to all things new. If we step back a little and think, this convergence of skill sets also exists in such so-called “traditional” creative spheres as movie-making. We operate along traditional lines, telling a story in the best way possible, using new tools. The technology remains subservient to the story.”

Like New York Minute, Lookin4Galt once again takes place in the city of New York. Do you have an international viewership for your projects? Is this new type of format received differently in France than in other countries?

“The web has no borders, so for that reason it would appear totally natural to address international viewers. My impression is that the general public, in France and elsewhere, greets this new format more avidly and spontaneously than do “webdoc” professionals.”
