Live action quality for a computer graphics budget: Always Sunset on Third Street 3©

About the Film
2012 saw the release of the third cinema box office hit in the Japanese film series Always: Sunset on Third Street. The film, Always: Sankhome No Yuhi ’64, takes place in Tokyo in 1964 and is the third hit movie of the series made by Takashi Yamazaki .They story line focuses on the lives of the inhabitants of Tokyo’s Third Street district. After a long period of economic growth, Japan is preparing for the Olympics, an event signaling change for the residents in Third Street. The film was shot at a variety of locations including at the Crescent Inc. Digi-Cast studio using the 4D Video scanning technology of 4D Views, France.

What was 4D VideoScanned for the film ?

4D Video Scanning allows productions to capture individual & multi-character live performances in costume with accessories and without markers. Productions can create reusable libraries of routine characters shots that can b eeasily composited anywhere in multiple shots. In Always Sunset on Third Street© 4D Video Scanning was used to scan secondary characters and extras, providing live-action quality shots in 4D for the price of a modest computer graphics budget. Director Yamazaki worked closely with Crescent Inc. in its Digi-Cast studio to create over a hundred reusable 4D character sequences for the film.

Why use 4D Video Scanning ?
4D Video Scanning can capture a large number of sequences in a short time, allowing productions to shorten the production filming schedule. As any 4D Video Scanning sequence can be composited into any shot in post-production. This allows productions to simplify on-set work by reducing the number of secondary characters required on set, there by allowing productions to shift costs to the post-production phase. 4D Video Scanned sequences are directly importable into AutoDesk® Maya® & 3ds Max® using plug-in technologies. In post-production scanned sequences do not need retargeting, clothing simulations or the use of other animation techniques. The scanning process reproduces the actors’ performances directly as they were expressed in studio.

4D Views technology was used on several Japanese film and television productions in 2012. Scanning operations were carried out by 4D Views’ long-term preferred partner, Crescent Inc. in their Digi-Cast© facility.
